ISP investing police involved shooting in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Indiana State Police are investigating a police involved shooting after an officer fired shots at a vehicle early Sunday morning.

According to ISP, at approximately 3:30 a.m., an officer with the Michigan City Police Department fired at a maroon suburban that was speeding at towards the officer in the 400 block of Pleasant Avenue.

The suburban was driven by 29-year-old Merwin Coleman of La Porte. It is unclear why he was initially speeding at the officer.

Troopers say Coleman was transported to Franciscan Health for treatment of a graze wound to his arm.

It is unknown if his wound was from the officer or from an earlier shooting in the 200 block of Pleasant Avenue or on Ridgeland Avenue, both of which police were investigating.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave.

The name of the officer has not yet been released as this is an ongoing investigation.
