IRS announces tax relief for residents of specific Indiana counties impacted by recent storms

ABC 57

WASHINGTON -- Federal tax relief will be available to individuals impacted by recent severe storms in Indiana.

The IRS announced a relief plan for those living or operating a business in Carroll, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union, and Wayne Counties.

Taxes due on or after August 11, and before February 1, 2027, will have until February 1 to file all taxes originally due in that period. The IRS says this also applies to those who had a valid extension for their 2025 individual income tax return.

The IRS says penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after Aug. 11, 2026, and before Aug. 26, 2026, will be abated as long as the tax deposits are made by Aug. 26, 2026.

The February 1 deadline also applies to quarterly payroll and certain excise tax returns normally due on November 2.

The IRS also says those living in federally declared disaster areas have the option to claim disaster-related losses on their federal income tax return for either the year the event occurred, or the prior year.

Those impacted by the storms outside these designated counties are asked to contact the IRS Special Services to make a request.
