SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After weeks of inconsistency, the Irish defense finally flashed potential against Arkansas. Notre Dame pitched a second-half shutout, finishing with three sacks, three tackles for loss, and an interception — their sharpest stretch yet under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash.

Safety Adon Shuler led the way with nine tackles, adding to his season total of 19, along with two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He said it comes down to “doing it for the brotherhood.” Fellow safety Tae Johnson added five tackles and a deflection, noting his growing confidence on the field.

A breakout performer has been freshman cornerback Mark Zackery IV. Targeted four times against Arkansas, he allowed just one catch for eight yards and recorded a crucial end-zone breakup. Head coach Marcus Freeman praised his maturity, while Zackery said he’s been focused on “gradually getting better” every week.

So far this season, Jalen Stroman leads the defense with 19 tackles, while linebacker Boubacar Traore has delivered two sacks and four tackles for loss. But the defense still has areas to clean up — Notre Dame is giving up nearly 390 yards per game and allowing close to six yards per play. Freeman admitted the unit has to cut down on explosive plays early.

Now, with Boise State up next, the challenge only grows. The Broncos bring the nation’s ninth-ranked offense, averaging over 520 yards per game. While Boise’s defense has struggled in the red zone, Freeman says the Irish must win their one-on-ones and stay disciplined.

With Leonard Moore sidelined, Shuler emphasized that the group’s mentality is simple: get the job done, no matter who’s on the field.
