Investigation underway after deadly police-involved shooting at Village Green
MISHAWAKA, Ind.—An investigation is underway into what led up to a deadly officer-involved shooting at the Village Green Mobile Home Park Neighborhood.
The incident took place on the 4500 block of Pheasant Run near Spyglass Lane at around 6:30 p.m. Monday. Police were called out to the area twice for reports of a man threatening others with a firearm.
According to police, a man identified as Michael Haas fired a gun, and a Mishawaka Police officer returned fire.
Haas was hit and taken to the hospital where he later died. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police identified the officer involved in the shooting as Pfc. Garrett Schock, who has been with the Mishawaka Police Department for four years. Schock was not injured in the shooting.
While processing the scene, detectives found a shotgun that was reportedly used by Haas.
Investigators also recovered all police body camera footage from the shooting, including Schock’s.
This is an ongoing investigation.
Per protocol, South Bend Police is overseeing this investigation due to the interlocal agreement put into place when the Metro Homicide Unit disbanded.
