Indiana State Police investigating police shooting

Indiana State Police were called in to investigate a shooting by police involving North Judson Police and the Starke County Sheriff's Department.

According to Indiana State Police, both North Judson and Starke County deputies responded to a home at 5023 W 800 S in North Judson for a domestic disturbance at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Officers encountered 29-year-old Richard Joseph Benwell at the residence.

Benwell refused to follow officers' commands and attempted to go back inside the home. A fight ensued and an officer's weapon discharged twice during the struggle, but did not hit anyone, reports said.

Benwell was also tasered several times, but he did not stop, according to police.

Benwell was shot once and was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with non-life threatening injuries.

No officers were injured.

Indiana State Police are investigating at the request of Starke County Sheriff Bill Dunlin.
