UPDATE: Court documents from La Porte County reveal Donell Davis was charged with the murder of 35-year-old John Taylor at the Westville Correctional Facility in November 2023.

After a four-day jury trial, a mistrial was declared on day four, Aug. 14, 2025.

The prosecution is already moving forward with re-trying Davis in a jury trial set for Jan. 26, 2026.

ORIGINAL STORY: WESTVILLE, Ind. - Indiana State Police is investigating the death of an inmate at the Westville Correctional Facility Tuesday morning.

According to the investigation, troopers were called to the facility around 8 a.m. after 35-year-old John Taylor was found dead.

An autopsy by the La Porte County Coroner determined Taylor died from blunt force trauma.

Taylor was from Greene County, Indiana.

This is an ongoing investigation.
