Indiana State Police car rear ended during I-80 traffic stop Monday

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -- An allegedly impaired driver crashed into the back of an Indiana State Police patrol car while it was parked on the side on I-80 for a traffic stop early Monday morning.

Authorities say two Indiana State Police Troopers had a suspected drunk driver pulled over on I-80 near Calumet Avenue in Lake County around 2:15 a.m. and were performing a routine sobriety field test when another driver crashed into the rear of the ISP Dodge Charger which then sent debris into the other ISP patrol car on the scene, a Dodge Durango.

The vehicle then fled the scene and continued east on I-80.

Authorities found the suspect vehicle near the three mile-marker driving on three wheels with sparks coming from underneath.

"The vehicle then struck the median wall and became disabled," Indiana State Police said. "The driver exited the vehicle and went north across the westbound lanes with Trooper Haddon in foot pursuit. The suspect ran up to a Hammond Fire Battalion Chief in his marked fire vehicle and began hitting the window to get into the truck. As Trooper Haddon approached, the suspect again ran across the westbound lanes into traffic before finally stopping and being placed into custody."

The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Kyle C. Barbour of Hammond and taken to the Lake County Jail.

He is preliminarily charged with the following:

  • O.W.I. Endangering a Person- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Failure to Report a Crash- Class B Misdemeanor
  • Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving Causing Property Damage- Class B Misdemeanor

Final charges will be determined by the Lake County Prosecutor.
