Indiana Senate passes bill to increase economic development in St. Joseph County

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus announced on Monday that the Indian Senate passed Senate Bill 468, authored by Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend), with a vote of 49-0.

Besides Niezgodski, the bill was authored by Senator Ryan Mishler and Senator Linda Rogers.

The bill allows an eligible county and city to establish by ordinance, a Midwest Continental Divide Commission, and district for the purposes of acquiring, developing, funding, constructing, equipping, owning, leasing, and financing economic improvement projects in or serving the district.

"Economic development is key to driving business growth, tourism and job creation," said Niezgodski. "This bill paves the way for a recreational ecotourism trail system, which will not only attract visitors but also promote outdoor recreation and healthier lifestyles. I’m thrilled to see this initiative move forward and excited for the opportunities it will bring to our community."

State officials say SB 468 will now move to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration.
