BRISTOL, Ind. -- A cruelty and neglect case led to 26 of the 61 total animals the Humane Society of Elkhart County (HSEC) took in on Monday, straining the shelter's resources.

In addition to the cruelty and neglect case, the remaining 35 animals taken in were strays or from "unfortunate individual situations".

The cruelty and neglect case accounted for the HSEC's intake of 24 dogs and two cats, all of whom are currently unavailable for adoption as they are undergoing medical evaluations and receiving medical care.

To assist in making space for the new animals, the HSEC is offering two limited-time adoption promotions through Saturday.

First, all dogs over 40 lbs. have their adoption fees waived and come with a free leash, collar, harness, bag of dog food, and six months of heartworm preventative

Second, all cats have their adoption fees waived and come with a free cardboard cat carrier.
