NOW: Hockey 4 Life hosts ’Gordfather Classic’ fundraiser for longtime Icebox employee

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Skates were heard echoing, sticks were seen shooting, and pucks slid across the ice on Sunday morning at the Icebox for the 'Gordfather Classic.'

The 'Gordfather Classic,' named after longtime Icebox employee, Gordie Zwick, who is currently facing a health crisis.

The tournament was made up of 18 teams, aimed at raising funds to take care of medical bills for Zwick and his family.

The event was all thanks to local South Bend nonprofit, Hockey 4 Life and board member Jack Basich.

"Gordie Zwick is family to us," Basich said. "He's been in the organization here at the Icebox for fifteen years. Zamboni driver, skate sharpener, friend – just someone to listen to, you know?"

Hockey 4 Life has been hosting these fundraisers for 20 years, with their first in 2008.

"It actually started with an unfortunate incident," Basich said. "When one of our players actually passed away on the ice. We got together as a family and raised money – just to help his family through the financial crisis."

For one of those close to the situation, Hockey 4 Life board member and tournament goalie Josh Setser, these events mean the world.

"It means everything," Setser said. "I mean, we've been doing something like this for the past 20 years, and it started with the hardship of losing one of my fellow goalies. To get people to come out the way they've been coming out – it's amazing."
