Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament returns to Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- After more than 20 years away, the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is returning to its Michigan roots with a stop in Benton Harbor.

Founded in 1974, the Gus Macker tournament has spread from its home state to hundreds of cities across the country, bringing thousands of basketball players of all skill levels together for a massive tournament.

Several streets in Benton Harbor will be shut down entirely to make room for the event.

Scott "Gus Macker" McNeil, the tournament founder, says the roving tournament has evolved into a festival atmosphere over the years.

Wherever the tournament goes, the organization works with local charities to put something back into the community.

When the tournament comes to Southwest Michigan, it'll be benefiting The Harbor Impact Foundation, a group dedicated to giving area student-athletes the chance to grow and thrive on and off the court.

As of this year, more than 30 athletes are in college on full-ride scholarships thanks to the Harbor Impact Foundation.

ABC57's Brian Conybeare is a founding piece of the Harbor Impact Foundation.

The "Gus Macker on the River" event runs from June 26-28, with tournament play starting on the 27. The deadline for teams to join is June 8.

Teams can apply online.
