BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - The Berrien County Health Department (BCHD) is offering free classes to learn how to administer Narcan, a medication used to reduce or reverse the effects of opioids.
In response to August as National Drug Overdose Awareness Month, the BCHD wants to put lifesaving medication and training in the hands of its citizens.
Symptoms of an overdose can include constricted pupils, losing consciousness, weak breathing and more.
Good Samaritan laws are in place in most states to protect those who are overdosing or others protecting them.
Michigan will not prosecute anyone who alerts first responders to a potential overdose. Don't hesitate to call 911.
This 15-minute training, for participants 18 years or older, is led by BCHD's certified Narcan trainers Lisa Peeples-Hurst and Shannon Larry-Burton.
Training participants also receive a free rescue kit with Narcan.
Pre-registration is required for the free training sessions.
Classes are held from 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at two locations:
- Wednesday, August 30 at 2149 E. Napier St., Benton Harbor, MI
- Thursday, August 31 at 1205 N. Front St., Niles, MI
You can sign up on the BCHD's website or call (269) 927-5622.
