Gary man dead after being struck by vehicle Monday night

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- The Starke County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the area of US 35 and 25 N around 9:07 p.m., Monday, for reports of a man in all black walking in the middle of the road and jumping in front of cars.

Around 9:14 p.m., deputies were informed of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the same area.

Deputies arrived to find an unconscious man on the side of the road.

The man, identified as 39-year-old Donnie Keaton of Gary, was given medical treatment on scene before being taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities' investigation determined a juvenile from Knox was driving south on US 35.

The driver told deputies Keaton was standing in the middle of the southbound lane.

The driver attempted to swerve to avoid Keaton but struck him.

The driver was uninjured.

Toxicology results are pending.

This incident remains under investigation.
