CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- The Feeding The Hungry program started in Cass County 15 years ago with just one truck of donations — and today, it’s grown into a countywide effort helping stock food pantries every holiday season with the help of mobile trucks from Action Ministries.
According to Action Ministries Co-Chairman Jim Allen, police, fire, and sheriff's departments raise nearly 20% of the campaign’s funds each year.
“This is amazing, because other cities can’t say that their police in their spare time are out raising money to support the community.”
At a luncheon, Action Ministries presented four awards, one to each department, to recognize the essential role first responders play in feeding their neighbors.
Organizers say the campaign wouldn’t be possible without community support, noting 95% of downtown businesses in Dowagiac also take part in the fundraiser.
