First phase of U.S. 20 bridge work begins April 18

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Bridge reconstruction work on the U.S. 20/31 bypass is set to begin on or after April 18, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced.

During this first phase, the eastbound lanes of the U.S. 20 bridge will be closed to traffic.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 20 will be converted into two-way traffic to accommodate the closure.

The ramps from eastbound U.S. 20 to northbound U.S. 31 and from southbound U.S. 31 to eastbound U.S. 20 will also be closed.

Closures will be in place through July.

Closures on U.S. 31 under the bridge will be in place overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the following evenings:

April

  • 19-20
  • 20-21
  • 21-22
  • 22-23
  • 25-26
  • 26-27

Northbound U.S. 31 traffic will be detoured to eastbound U.S. 20, while southbound U.S. 31 traffic will be detoured to westbound U.S. 20.

Work on this project is expected to continue through early December.
