Fire turns southwest Michigan barn to ashes Monday morning

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- A massive fire destroyed a barn and claimed the lives of many egg-laying chickens in southwest Michigan early Monday morning. 

South Haven Area Emergency Services is reporting the blaze at 972 68th Street in Casco Township was first called in by a passerby around 5:20 a.m. on April 14.

"SHAES responded with mutual aid from Ganges Township Fire Department," SHAES said. "Water needed to be shuttled by tankers to the scene. The barn was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. A second nearby barn was protected from flames."

No injuries, other than to the chickens, were reported in the fire.
