Fire captain facing OWI charges will be placed on unpaid leave

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The South Bend Board of Public Safety voted unanimously to place South Bend Fire Captain Brian Bartlett on unpaid leave when his 30 days of paid leave is up.

Bartlett was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person on February 22 for an incident that happened two days earlier while he was off duty.

Bartlett was allegedly driving under the influence and nearly struck an Indiana State Police trooper’s vehicle.

The trooper said Bartlett had glassy eyes, slurred speech and admitted to drinking beer, reports said.

Bartlett is due in court on April 20.
