Fight leads to shooting in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- On Nov. 30 at approximately 12:31 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1100 block of Kinyon Street in South Bend.

Upon arrival on the scene, responding officers located Dekeyta Phillips who had suffered gunshot wounds to his lower legs.

After speaking with Mr. Phillips's girlfriend, police learned that her and Phillips were staying at the home of her friend. Marreon Balboa, the father of the friend's children, was also at the residence.

The friend of Phillips and his girlfriend spoke to police and confirmed that her and Balboa had been arguing and escalated to a fight.

Phillips was asleep during the altercation but awoke to his girlfriend attempting to break up the fight.

During the incident, Balboa retrieved a handgun from the bedroom and fired one round, hitting Phillips.

Balboa fled the scene and threw the handgun into the snow, he was located near the home, and the handgun was later recovered.

Marreon Balboa is charged with:

  • Criminal Recklessness committed with a deadly weapon (F6)
  • Pointing a Firearm at Another (F6)
  • Domestic Battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years old (F6)
  • Disorderly Conduct (Misdemeanor)
  • Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury (Misdemeanor)
