ELKAHRT, Ind. -- Elkhart Police Department says it is investigating a deadly hit-and-run that happened Wednesday near the 2200 block of South Main St.

Officers were dispatched to the hit-and-run crash with injuries just after 10 pm. When officers got there, they found a man along the road who was unresponsive. Medics tried life-saving measures before he was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say a suspect is in custody, but the hit-and-run victim has not been identified.

According to the initial investigation, a truck driving southbound on S. Main St hit the victim and kept driving. The Elkhart Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team was activated to investigate the crash.

In the investigation, officers found the suspect vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, in the 24000 block of County Road 26.

Officers arrested a 20-year-old man, now booked in the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges.

Charges include Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or More. The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office will review this arrest for formal criminal charges. If a judicial officer finds probably cause for arrest and sets bail. EPD will release the name of the suspect.

EPD is still trying to identify the victim in the crash, who police say appears to be a Hispanic male in his 50’s or 60’s with a scroll tattoo on his chest.
