UPDATE: Elkhart mayor releases statement regarding death of teen in officer-involved shooting

UPDATE: Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson released a statement Monday afternoon regarding the weekend death of a 17-year-old which was the result of an officer-involved shooting.

Mayor Roberson's statement is as follows:

"My heart goes out to all involved in Sunday's tragic event. The loss of a 17-year-old member of our community is devastating. My deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones.

I know emotions are raw right now, with comments and videos being spread on social media. Please allow this investigation to run its course. This shooting is being thoroughly investigated by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit. Once the investigation is complete, it will be reviewed by the Elkhart County Prosecutor. As soon as legally possible, I will make the results of the investigation available to the public. I ask anyone with information regarding this incident to please contact the Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.

Anytime that we have additional information that we can release, we will."

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at 500 E Beardsley Ave. An officer from the Elkhart Police Department spotted a suspicious vehicle.

The officer approached the adult driver and identified several male and female passengers, including some juveniles. Another officer arrived to assist.

Around 1:49 a.m., both officers fired their guns, injuring a male passenger in the vehicle. They provided first aid at the scene, and despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced deceased. 

Authorities recovered multiple handguns from inside and around the vehicle, along with the officers’ personal firearms. During the incident, one officer sustained a minor injury but did not need medical treatment.

No other injuries were reported, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The name of the 17-year-old male victim is being withheld at this time.

Both officers are on administrative leave while the Homicide Unit investigates and completes its internal review.
