Elkhart County investigating officer involved shooting
ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at 500 E Beardsley Ave. An officer from the Elkhart Police Department spotted a suspicious vehicle
The officer approached the adult driver and identified several male and female passengers, including some juveniles. Another officer arrived to assist.
Around 1:49 a.m., both officers fired their guns, injuring a male passenger in the vehicle. They provided first aid at the scene, and despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced deceased.
Authorities recovered multiple handguns from inside and around the vehicle, along with the officers’ personal firearms. During the incident, one officer sustained a minor injury but did not need medical treatment.
No other injuries were reported, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The name of the 17-year-old male victim is being withheld at this time.
Both officers are on administrative leave while the Homicide Unit investigates and completes its internal review.
