ELKHART COUNTY, Ind.-Its heroes vs. heroes! The 3rd annual “Battle of the Badges” blood drive is set to take place in Elkhart Friday afternoon.

Elkhart County’s first responders are partnering with the American Red Cross to raise awareness for a good cause.

Any personnel who carry a badge, along with their family, friends and the community can donate blood.

It’s a friendly competition between law enforcement and firefighters to see who gets the most people to come out to the event. At the end of the drive, one side walks away with bragging rights.

“It has been successful,” said Detective Bureau Captain Jeff Siegel with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

“In law enforcement, we like to guilt and shame our co-workers into doing things they don’t want to do. It’s just fun to see the friendly rivalry that comes out between some of the departments,” Siegel said.

Before taking a seat in the donation chair, attendees have to vote for their emergency service of choice.

According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. The department hopes the community will realize the importance of donating blood.

“Every year I come to this event not only because of the fun, but also knowing it is good for our communities,” Siegel said.

The blood drive will take place at the Sheriff’s Department from 12 P.M. to 6 P.M. in the Large Training Room at 26861 CR 26 in Elkhart.

Being a first responder is not required to attend. If you cannot donate blood, the department says they still need people to volunteer their time to help out with the event.
