EFD saves dog and cat from burning building Wednesday

ELKHART, Ind. -- Ten total vehicles, including four engines and one aerial responded to a building fire in the 900 block of 2nd Street in Elkhart around 6:49 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched to the scene for a possible structure fire and the first unit to arrive reported heavy smoke coming from the back area near the roof of the first floor.

"No one was home at the time of the fire," an EFD official said.

"It was reported that a dog and a cat were still inside. The dog was removed by EFD personnel and the cat was found safely after the fire was out."

The fire was under control by 7:22 p.m. and no injuries or casualties were reported.

The report states that the fire originated near the first floor bathroom, but the incident is still under investigation.
