Cassopolis man sentenced in deadly 2025 shooting in Dowagiac

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- A Cassopolis man faces prison time for his role in a deadly 2025 shooting.

Demorrio Lowes pleaded guilty to and was convicted of manslaughter. On Friday, July 17, he was sentenced to six to 15 years in prison, with a jail credit of 352 days.

The shooting happened in July 2025 in the area of Cherry Street near Halstead Street in Dowagiac. Officers were told a verbal altercation between Lowes and the victim led to Lowes pulling out a gun and firing several times. The victim, a 19-year-old man from Benton Harbor, died from his injuries at the hospital.

Previous Open Murder and Felony Firearm charges against Lowes were dropped.
