Does Notre Dame’s shocking loss Saturday have an impact on the local economy?
South Bend, Ind. -- Saturday’s shocking defeat shook up Fighting Irish fans across the globe, but their neighbors right down the street at Taphouse on the Edge says one loss is not enough to tackle the Irish Spirit.
“It was super disappointing. I think we really thought after Texas we were going to pull it through and have it we were hoping to undefeated season,” said Annamarie Cartwright the General Manager at Taphouse on the Edge.
They and other businesses across the region heavily rely on Football Season every year, on average generating 27 million dollars into the local economy each home game.
“It was a great crowd. Full house at Notre Dame Stadium. Hotels had a little bit of occupancy last strong average daily rate beautiful weather great weekend other than the final results on the field,” said Jeff Jarnecke the Executive Director of Visit South Bend Mishawaka.
But even a loss at home for the Irish is still a win for hotels, restaurants, and other businesses.
“Yeah, we’re going to feel it a little bit of course but each of those games and are a little bit different each and every time we kick at Notre Dame Stadium,” added Jarnecke.
However, if they don’t make the playoffs, that is when the area will feel the greatest impact of Saturday’s loss.
“Biggest difference becomes though for the first time now with the expanded college football playoff if we happen to not make that field and have that opportunity which one gonna be a guarantee and I given the year and certainly didn’t exist before now anyway but what a incredible additive factor that would be for St. Joseph County if we could host one more football game in the month of December,” Jarnecke explained.
But Taphouse on the edge is holding on to hope for the rest of the season.
“So I don’t think it’s gonna affect the camaraderie and the hype of the season and I think that everybody’s just as excited and want to see where the season is gonna take us,” said Cartwright.
The 1400 rentals and 53 hotels have already seen bookings for the first weekend in playoffs and they hope to be able to see that additional boost come December.
