LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County sheriff's deputy who was shot at a Michigan City hospital is continuing steadily on the road to recovery, per local officials.

In a post from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office, officials say Deputy Jon Samuelson is seeing several positive developments in his treatment and physical rehabilitation.

The post says subtle sensation is returning to his thighs; it also says Samuelson is describing sensation in his buttocks and lower back.

Officials also say his torso balance and strength have improved, and that he is able to do modified push-ups. Jon also reportedly began to move his big right toe on command.

Samuelson was also reunited with his now service-certified dog Mable, a two-year-old chocolate labrador.
