PENN TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- The Penn Township Planning Board had a special meeting today to discuss and vote on the passage of a one-year moratorium on Data Centers within the township.
A 30-day moratorium was passed for the same area only a week and a half ago, but local outcry for a longer option was such that the board felt they had to reconvene to discuss the option. The one-year option passed at today's meeting.
The board members feel that the year moratorium will allow them the time required to gather comprehensive information about the impact of data centers on communities, ideally over a longer period, but acknowledges the need for a balance between thoroughness and timeliness.
An amendment to the moratorium proposal includes hiring a third-party lawyer to review and suggest improvements. The board emphasizes the importance of active engagement during the moratorium, including meetings and environmental studies, to ensure the township's protection and informed decision-making.
