Couple dies after truck rear-ends horse drawn buggy, driver faces felonies

ABC 57

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from Marshall County reveal a man is facing felonies following a crash with a horse-drawn buggy on June 30.

Documents state Marshall County Dispatch received a call around 5:31 p.m. regarding a crash on 8th Road near the intersection with Apple Road in Bourbon.

While enroute, first responders were informed life-saving measure instructions were being provided to people on scene.

Deputies arrived to learn the Marshall County Coroner's Office had been requested to respond to the scene for a deceased couple, later identified as 62-year-old Aden Chupp and 62-year-old Mary Chupp both of Nappanee.

Authorities observed a silver Ford 150 with heavy front-end damage in a corn field on the north side of the roadway.

The buggy was found heavily damaged off the north side of the roadway with an injured horse tied to a nearby utility pole.

The driver of the F150, identified as 43-year-old Jarrett L. Sutton, was found standing near his vehicle by deputies.

Sutton allegedly told authorities he couldn’t recall what happened to cause the crash.

Sutton was then taken to the Community Hospital of Bremen where he consented to a chemical test due to the serious bodily injury/fatal vehicle collision.

On Aug. 7, the Indiana Department of Toxicology reported Sutton's blood sample tested positive for the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Authorities say at the time of the crash, Sutton's driving privileges were suspended through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Sutton was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death, a Level 4 Felony, and Driving While Suspended Resulting in Death, a Level 5 Felony.
