MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- As some Mishawaka students head back to school this week, they’ll be greeted by flashing lights, police cars and fire trucks with a banner that reads “School’s back in session, so please slow down.” As kids head back to school, possibly taking new routes and feeling first day jitters, safety is Mishawaka's top priority. This is why “Cool Your Engines” is back for another back-to-school season. “Cool Your Engines” is a reminder for people to observe the school zone speed limits and bus laws they might have forgotten about during the summer. “It's just like anything, out of sight out of mind.” Says Fire chief Josh Jester, “You don't think about it during the summer. Kids aren't in school; you don't see the school busses out, you don't see the kids crossing the street all the time. And when that one day comes and school starts again, its sudden, it doesn't phase in. It’s just boom! Theres school. So, we want everyone to know school is back in session. It's time to slow down. Get back in the rhyme, the rhythm. Again, school zones are there to keep people safe. They're there all year long, but when the kids are in session is what we really do that for. And we want to make sure the kids are taken care of and they have a safe walk to school.” So, if you see police lights or a firetruck flashing, but the vehicle is stationary and near a school, don’t be alarmed, but be cognizant of little feet taking big steps in their education. Chief Jester says the event has gone on since the 80s and is a great way to meet community children and show them that their community cares about them.
