Construction on Leeper Park’s tennis courts start today
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Leeper Park is reconstructing their tennis courts with hopes of reconnecting the community.
The nearly $2 million project will include 13 full-sized courts. Along with new fencing, sidewalks, net anchors, posts, and nets.
Patty Schrock, president of the South Bend Community Tennis Association, wants to bring more than just a physical renovation to the courts. She wants to bring back the tennis community in South Bend.
“We had adult league players and we had people playing until 10P.M. You know you can’t recreate the past,” said Schrock.
Although you can’t recreate the past, you can incorporate previous elements to make a brighter future.
Macey Hannah, director of recreation for South Bend Venues, Parks and Arts, looks forward to the community occupying the courts again.
“Leeper Park is going to be a hub for tennis in the future, and has been for many years,” said Hannah.
There will be a groundbreaking ceremony in the next few weeks.
Schrock said that construction is scheduled to finish on Sept. 22.
If the construction is completed on schedule, it will be just in time for the parks first National David Filer Memorial Tournament.
