Chilly, rainy weather puts damper on holiday

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. --- A chilly, rainy, overcast Memorial Day put a damper on the start of the summer season. Only a few boats were out on Lake Michigan and only a few people braved the beaches.

"The rain blew us off the lake this morning and so we came here to wander around,” said Mary Cushing.

Paul and Mary Cushing were prepared for whatever Michiana weather dished up. While they hoped to spend more time on the lake, they were okay with exploring downtown St. Joe.

"I don't mind coming out here because I love the shops and just how fun it is out here,” said Mary.

Inside Moxie's Boutique, they say they notice when the weather doesn't go according to plans.

"Sometime in the summer when it rain, it's a good thing for us because people aren't on the beach but we really need the weather to be nice this time for people to start getting out,” said Debi Smith-Taylor of Moxie’s Boutique.

Smith Taylor says more purses and jewels were flying out the door this time last year-when St Joe saw an early summer.

“Some decent days Friday and Saturday. The weather yesterday there was not much going on and today we had very little,” said Smith-Taylor.

Many people told me they are hoping for warmer temps soon, but this will definitely make them appreciate the sunshine this summer.
