Child falls from second story apartment window

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --  A 1-year-old fell from a second story apartment window Thursday afternoon.

South Bend Police tell ABC 57 News that the baby was staying with a relative at the time of the accident.

It happened at 2:20 p.m. at 3713 Curtis Drive at Beacon Heights Apartment complex on the SW side.

"All I heard was a kid fell out the window and bust his head, a lot of blood everywhere," Triston Chapman said.

Chapman doesn't live at the apartment complex but said he visits often.

"The kids need to be more supervised than they are out here, all of them because all they do is run around here," Chapman said.

The child, who was not identified, was rushed to Memorial Hospital. Officers first on the scene said the baby suffered a head injury and was bleeding from the head when they arrived.

Captain Phil Trent with the South Bend Police Department said the baby was being watched by a relative at the time of the accident; that relative was also not identified.

Trent said Child Protective Services were also called to the apartment, not just because of the fall but because the inside of the apartment was "filthy."

"There was dirt everywhere," Trent said.

It's not known if any other children actually live inside that apartment. The baby was being watched by the relative while the baby's mother was working.

CPS is investigating, the police department will work with them to decide if charges need to be filed.

Details on the child's injuries were not explain, although we are told that he is expected to be okay.
