Chicago's Original Rainbow Ice Cream Cone comes to New Buffalo

NEW BUFFALO, Mich. - The Original Rainbow Cone Ice Cream Shop is opening in New Buffalo this Memorial Day Weekend.

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting is happening at the new location at 1 North Whittaker Street inside Sonny D’s.

The nearly 100-year-old franchise first opened its doors in Chicago, with its iconic five-flavor ice cream cone.

The stack of five flavors include chocolate, strawberry, palmer house, pistachio, and orange sherbet, each sliced, not scooped, into a cone.

The dessert treat is considered a Chicago classic, first created by "Grandpa Joe" Sapp and his wife Katherine in the summer of 1926.

Store officials say they're excited to bring the beloved tradition to New Buffalo. And whether you’re a local or just visiting, you're encouraged to come by and celebrate the treat and make new summer memories.
