Chicago police officer shot and killed, suspects in custody

CHICAGO -- Several suspects are in custody after a Chicago police officer was shot and killed Thursday night in the Chatham neighborhood according from ABC7 WLS and Chicago Police Department. 

CPD said officers assigned to the 6th District Tactical Team were on patrol when they attempted to make a stop on male suspect at around 9:50 p.m. As officers approached the suspect fled on foot into a nearby building. Officers were confronted by another suspect that was armed with a rifle. 

Officials told ABC7, a 36-year-old female officer was shot and was taken to the University of Chicago hospital in a squad car. She later died due to her injuries.

The South Bend Police Department made a social media post Friday just before 8 a.m., mourning the loss of the officer.
