Charges filed against stabbing suspect in connection to New Year's Eve officer-involved shooting

St. Joseph County Jail

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A 55-year-old man is now facing charges connected to a stabbing in Mishawaka on New Year's Eve, which led to an officer discharging his firearm.

Stephen Sherwood faces charges of Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony, Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony, Burglary while Armed with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 2 Felony, and Intimidation, a Level 5 Felony.

New court documents show Mishawaka Police officers arrived at the 200 block of Gernhart Avenue on Wednesday for a reported stabbing, where they heard a woman screaming inside the house. An officer opened the front door to find the woman holding a small child with Sherwood next to them. Sherwood closed the door on the officer who then allegedly fired his gun into the door. The officer entered the home to find Sherwood had been struck by multiple gunshots. Another man was also found with stab wounds. He and Sherwood were then taken to the hospital.

During their investigation of the stabbing incident, officers were told by the woman in the home that Sherwood is her ex-boyfriend, and that the stabbing victim is her current boyfriend.

According to court documents, Sherwood was driving past her home earlier in the day and texted her a picture of the boyfriend's truck parked outside. He sent another text message saying, "you killed me," to which the homeowner did not respond. A short time later, Sherwood allegedly entered the house through the back door and confronted the victim, leading to a physical altercation. The homeowner said she called 911 and Sherwood yelled at her to put the phone down.

The fight moved to another room of the house, then Sherwood reportedly came towards the homeowner carrying a knife while she was holding her two-month-old grandson. Sherwood told her to put the baby down, but she refused, and he put the knife to her throat. It was at this time that officers arrived at the home and opened the door. The homeowner told police that Sherwood was holding the knife when he closed the door, moments before he was shot.

Officers later spoke to the stabbing victim at the hospital, who recounted Sherwood entering the home. He told police that Sherwood threatened him with a razor knife and cut him. The victim then ran to the bedroom to grab his own knife to defend himself. Sherwood allegedly continued to attack him before leaving the room and getting on top of the homeowner. The victim says he attempted to pull Sherwood off of her, leading to another altercation in which he stabbed Sherwood in the stomach. Sherwood then allegedly slashed him in the neck with his knife. The victim says he saw the front door open and watched Sherwood slam the door before gunshots were fired.

The St. Joseph County Police Department and South Bend Police Department continue to investigate the Mishawaka officer, who has not been named, firing his weapon.

According to the prosecutor's office, probable cause was found to arrest Sherwood, who remains in the hospital from his injuries. Once he is released from the hospital, Sherwood will be taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

Documents also note that Sherwood was previously convicted of Murder. ABC57 News was able to confirm that Sherwood was charged in April of 1996 in Morgan County, IN. A jury recommended that he be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. The court sentenced Sherwood to 65 years in prison.
