ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- As part of a broad, over-arching plan for the St. Joseph County Public Library system, renovations are set to begin on the Centre branch on Nov. 25 which will result in the branch being closed for the foreseeable future.

"The first major renovation under the library's system-wide plan, 'Our Next Chapter,' will feature new study rooms, an outdoor story trail, and more," said library Communications Manager Daniel Lichty. "While the Francis Branch recently closed briefly for mechanical updates, the Centre branch library will be the first to undergo a full-scale renovation."

Officials say the $1.5 million update will be the first major renovation at Centre since it was built in 1999.

"After 2 years of planning, it’s exciting to begin the next chapter of our branches starting with Centre’s renovation. The enhancements at this library will be worth the wait," said Stephanie Murphy, SJCPL’s Executive Director.

The renovations will be more of a modernization, according to the plan. Improvements will include energy-efficient lighting, fresh paint, new carpet, and updated furnishings.

Library officials say the project will refresh the branch’s look and functionality.

"In addition, exciting new features include new study rooms, upgraded meeting spaces, and a reimagined outdoor area," Lichty said. "This new space will feature native plants and a park-like environment with an outdoor story trail, creating playful, interactive spaces for children and families."

The Centre branch is expected to reopen in the fall of 2025, but for more info and the latest updates, you can visit the SJCPL website.
