Cass County driver transported to hospital after collision with tree

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports his office is investigating a single vehicle injury crash on Decatur Rd near Dutch Settlement St in Penn Twp., Cass County, Michigan.

This incident occurred on Sunday morning around 8:45 a.m.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene after a north bound vehicle driven by a 22-year-old male from South Bend, IN left the roadway and struck a tree. 

The mans vehicle caught fire and the owner of the property was able to assist the driver with exiting the vehicle.

The driver was transported from the scene to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment.  Penn Township Fire Department extinguished the vehicle fire.

Intoxicating substances may have been factors in the crash.  It is currently unknown if the driver was using a seatbelt and if airbags deployed due to the car fire.

Deputies were assisted on scene by Cass County Animal Control, Penn Township Fire Department, Pride Care Ambulance, and the Lowe Foundation Security Patrol.

This incident remains under investigation at this time.
