Car owner responds after Elkhart sergeant crashes into parked car
ELKHART, Ind. -- Not exactly the site you want to see late at night; a cop car flipped over, and your own vehicle being hit in all the chaos.
An Elkhart police sergeant is under investigation after a crash on Franklin Street.
According to a release from Elkhart police, sergeant Jesus Contreras told officials that he had briefly taken his eyes off the road while looking for an item, which is what led to the crash.
This is the moment when Elkhart sergeant Contreras crashed into the parked 2012 Chevy sedan belonging to Samantha Davies. Davies now says she and her family are without a vehicle, as that was their only mode of transportation, and it suffered serious damage in Tuesday night's collision.
"We couldn't even get in the trunk, and all of our personal belongings in that trunk, laptop, you name it, we had soccer balls for our daughter, everything you can think of," says Samantha Davies, owner of the car that was crashed into.
The crash happened around 9 pm, with Davies and her husband both home.
She says the treatment she got when approaching her damaged vehicle wasn't something she appreciated.
"They're actually moving us away, and that's on video, like step away, get away from the car, get away from the evidence, things like that, and I'm like we're the people that should be collecting the evidence too, that's my thing too," says Davies.
Elkhart police telling ABC57 the sergeant was travelling between 27 and 32 miles per hour at the time of the crash, and that results of a mandatory post incident alcohol and drug blood test are pending, though there is no indication he was impaired. The chief's review board will go over the crash.
One neighbor says she couldn't believe how loud the collision was.
"I was just dropping off my daughter to my mom's house, and on the way back home, got out of my car, went into my house, put my purse down, and heard a huge screech, and a crash, and I came out, and the car was flipped," says Nykole Yacks, Samantha's neighbor.
Davies says she wants the police department and city to make this right.
"Transparency, I think that's the biggest thing. What would happen if you did hit a child? We've been saying that all day, thank god it was a car," says Davies.
Elkhart police say sergeant Contreras was taken to the hospital with bruising from his seatbelt.
