Bristol man convicted in murder of his uncle
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A Bristol man has been convicted of killing his uncle, Byron Bussard, in January 2015.
Charles David Bussard was convicted of one count of murder following a short trial, according to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.
Byron was reported missing in February 2015, but he was believed to be a victim of homicide due to suspicions from detectives at the time, according to the prosecutor's office.
The case was cold until January 2020 when Charles contacted the sheriff's office saying he wanted to provide information about his uncle.
During a formal interview in 2020, Charles admitted to shooting Byron on January 22, 2015 while Byron was in bed, reports said.
Charles then burned the mattress and Byron's body and cleaned up the crime scene, reports said.
At trial, Charles changed his story and said the shooting was an accident, according to the Truth.
The jury deliberated for less than an hour.
Bussard will be sentenced on September 9.
