Meteorologist Joe Rao, sky watching expert and lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, joined ABC57's Brian Conybeare in studio via video chat, to discuss this strange smoky scene hitting the Big Apple and affecting us right here in Michiana.
The skyline started smoky, then turned dark orange for several hours Wednesday.
The air quality index hit 484, which is considered extremely hazardous.
Even 150 or above is considered unhealthy, and New York is still near 200 as of Thursday.
People there, especially those with asthma and other breathing issues are being asked to wear masks outdoors, to breathe safely.
