Berrien County man pleads no contest to domestic abuse against late wife, sentencing set for October

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Adam Beckerink, a Chicago attorney, pleaded no contest Friday to domestic violence charges involving his late wife, Caitlin Tracey, in Berrien County, Michigan.
As part of a plea deal, Beckerink admitted to contempt of court for violating a no-contact order and acknowledged interfering with Tracey’s attempt to call 911 during one of several reported abuse incidents at her New Buffalo home. The plea spares him a trial that had been scheduled for Sept. 9.
Prosecutors had secured key evidence for trial, including 911 recordings and police body-camera footage of Tracey describing abuse. Because of her death in October 2024, a judge ruled that those recordings could be used in court. Tracey was found dead in the stairwell of the South Loop high-rise where she and Beckerink lived.
The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled she died from a fall, but the manner of death remains undetermined. Beckerink has not been charged in connection with her death.
Beckerink is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 20. Tracey’s family is expected to deliver a victim impact statement in court.
