The event begins at 10 a.m. at Pinhook Park.
On Saturday, the park will debut a new trail, in partnership with WNIT, based on the PBS series Nature Cat. It will have signs to help kids and adults learn about nature in a fun way.
“I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time,” said President and General Manager of WNIT, Greg Giczi. “We conceived this concept [Nature Cat Trail] in 2018 to take lessons from an educational children’s program and make it to into real life experience. Spiffy Pictures, the creators of Nature Cat, and VPA have been terrific partners for this first-ever-anywhere-project.”
The annual tree giveaway will begin at 10 a.m. The first 77 people will receive a native Indiana tree.
They will also be handing out 300 tree saplings, provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The event will also celebrate South Bend as a Tree City USA award recipient for 25 consecutive years.
“It’s a great accomplishment for our city to be recognized as a Tree City USA for more than 25 years consecutively,” said VPA Forester, Brent Thompson. “Not only is it a nod to the city’s commitment to our environment, but a nod to the high standards of care the team maintains throughout the city each year.”
