Angela Boulevard Improvement Project construction begins April 15
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Angela Boulevard Improvement Project is set to begin construction on Monday and is expected to be completed by mid-July.
"The project begins on Angela Boulevard at Michigan Street and continues to Leahy Drive with most of the changes occurring between Notre Dame Avenue and Leahy Drive," city officials said. "This section includes the addition of a new traffic signal at Joyce Drive and the installation of bumpouts at three intersections: Eddy Street, Joyce Drive and Leahy Drive."
New on-street parking, trees and landscaping will also be added.
"Work on Angela Boulevard between Michigan Street and Notre Dame Avenue includes constructing a new multipurpose path to the north side of the street from Pokagon Street west to Michigan Street," city officials said. "Once completed, this entire section of Angela Boulevard will be restriped to two travel lanes and a continuous center left turn lane."
The focus of the project is to help improve pedestrian, cyclist, and driver safety in the highly trafficked area.
Officials say Angela Boulevard will remain open to traffic during construction with limited lane restrictions, but work will temporarily be stopped during special events at Notre Dame such as Commencement.
Access to all businesses in the impacted areas will be maintained during construction.
Construction will take place in two phases. The first phase of building a multipurpose path on the north side of Angela from Michigan to connect with the existing sidewalk between Stanfield and Pokagon Streets is expected to be completed by mid-May.
