Alabama man charged in semi-truck crash that blocked I-94

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- Joseph Shirley, a man from Alabama, has been charged for a crash that left a semi-truck turned over and blocking I-94.

Shirley was charged with Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more as a Level 5 Felony, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated as a Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person as a Misdemeanor.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, officers were dispatched around 6 p.m. in response to a car crash on I-94. All lanes were blocked by a semi-trailer truck that had rolled onto its driver side.

The driver, Shirley, stated that he had drunk approximately 10 beers prior to the crash. A portable breath test resulted in a 0.1447 BAC. Shirley further stated that he had been driving for nearly 10 hours from Davenport, Iowa that day.

Shirley and another man sustained injuries from the crash, with the other man suffering a broken leg and being taken to Franciscan Hospital.

Shirley's first hearing is Friday, Dec. 5.
