AAA projects record-breaking end-of-year travel numbers

A projected 122.4 million Americans are set to travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday, December 20th and New Year's Day. People in Indiana make up 2.9 million of those traveling, according to AAA spokeswoman Molly Hart.
"Since COVID, we have seen an increase of people traveling throughout the year and whether it's Fourth of July, Memorial Day and year-end, and we attribute this to a couple of different reasons,” said Hart. “During COVID, people were working from home and working remote. Some ended up having to go back into the office maybe two or three days a week, but others continue to work remote, so that gives people a lot of flexibility, because they can bring their laptop with them and work while they're away. You know, if they need to for one or two days."
More than 109 million people are planning to drive to their destinations nationwide, according to AAA. Hart says 2.6 million Hoosiers are opting to drive to their destinations.
If you are driving to your destination during this holiday period, Hart suggests leaving in the morning to beat traffic.
Below is a table from AAA outlining the best/worst times to be on the road due to holiday traffic congestion.
Hart says there’s still time to get your car checked before you drive to make sure your tires, fluids and brakes are good to go. AAA projects over 8 million people will board a plane to get to their holiday destinations this year.
Hart says people should get to the airport at least two hours in advance.
"Also, keep checking your app, the airline app, to make sure it is leaving on time. As you know, with winter weather, whether it's here or maybe in Colorado, there's a domino effect throughout the day, so your flight might be delayed or even canceled. So, make sure you stay on top of that, we encourage you to bring your carry-on bag, and you should include your medications and maybe a change of clothes, just in case there is a cancellation and you need another day before you get to your destination."
Hart says air and auto travel are breaking records but so is travel by other methods.
“But what actually is also going up is other modes of transportation, by 11 percent and other modes of transportation include whether you're taking a train or a bus or cruises. The top destinations for people going domestically are in Florida, and it's Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, all of those have ports, and cruises are really popular right now,” said Hart.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration said it would abandon a Biden administration plan that outlined airlines compensating stranded travelers with cash, lodging, and meals if they were impacted by cancellations or changes.
