UPDATE: 29-year-old motorcyclist identified in deadly crash with semi-truck

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- UPDATE: The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office reports on Wednesday, around 6:36 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving an Amazon tractor semi-trailer and a motorcycle at S.R. 2 at Chapel Lane in South Bend. 

Police arrived to find the motorcyclist, identified as 29-year-old Tyler Lee Smith of Baroda, Mich., critically injured.

Authorities say the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team was then activated, pursuant to protocol.

Authorities say their initial investigation indicates the semi, driven by 35-year-old Volodymyr Kryzhan of Bound Brook, N.J., was attempting to make a U-turn on S.R. 2 when he was struck in the trailer by the Smith.

Smith was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Kryzhan was uninjured and cooperated with authorities.  Authorities add the preliminary investigation did not show any signs of impairment.

The crash remains under investigation by FACT.

ORIGINAL STORY: The St. Joseph County Police Department reports officers responded to S.R. 2 and Chapel Lane for a crash involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m.

Police say the motorcyclist, identified as a 29-year-old man, died from his injuries.

There were no other reported injuries.

The investigation is now being handled by FACT and further info will come from them or the prosecutor's office.

Names of those involved have not been released at this time.
