LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A 42-year-old La Porte man is in jail following a June 12 traffic stop which led to deputies located a large amount of narcotics.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports a deputy was traveling south on C.R. 600 West around 3:43 p.m., when he witnessed a black car, also driving south, drive left of center on two occasions.

The deputy said that's when the car abruptly turned into the driveway of a home in the 700-north block of C.R. 600 West.

Authorities say that's when the deputy pulled in behind the man, later identified as Eugene Wallace.

The homeowner came out and informed the deputy she didn't know Wallace and he didn't have permission to be on her property.

A La Porte County narcotics detection K9 then conducted a free-air sniff around the car, positively alerting authorities.

A vehicle search was then conducted, leading to the discovery of a large quantity of narcotics.

Wallace was arrested and taken to La Porte County Jail.

During the booking process at the jail, authorities say Wallace was observed with an unknown object in his mouth.

Authorities say Wallace then began to resist as the jail deputy attempted to retrieve the item. Before being secured in handcuffs, Wallace is reported to have spat on the jail deputy and a jail sergeant.

The substance Wallace spit at the two was later identified as cocaine according to the report.

Wallace was taken to an area hospital for medical clearance and after a six-hour observation period, was taken back to jail.

Wallace is charged with two counts of Dealing a Schedule I Drug, as Level 2 Felonies, two counts of Battery Against a Public Safety Official, as Level 5 Felonies, Trafficking w/an Inmate, a Level 5 Felony, Possession of Cocaine, a Level 5 Felony, and Possession of Schedule I Substance, a Level 6 Felony.

Wallace remains in jail, held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
