ORIGINAL STORY: BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- A 20-year-old man in Benton Harbor has been charged with the murder of a 15-year-old boy shot Wednesday, Sept. 17.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety confirmed with ABC57 Tuesday that the 15-year-old killed was a Bridge Academy student at Benton Harbor Area Schools.
On Wednesday, Sept. 17, officers responded to the 1000 block of Buss Avenue for reports of a shooting, where they found a wounded 15-year-old. He was transported to Corewell Hospital in St. Joseph before being transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Police say they waited six days before releasing information about the shooting because of conflicting statements from sources involved in the case and out of respect for the victim’s family.
During the investigation, a 20-year-old man was detained as a person of interest. Additionally, a 16-year-old was sent to the Berrien Juvenile Center.
The suspect was moved to the Berrien County Jail, where he was charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon. When the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office learned of the 15-year-old's death, they upgraded his charges to Open Murder and Assault with Intent to Murder.
The victim's name has been withheld due to his age, and the 20-year-old's name is currently being withheld pending his arraignment.
Police say this is the first murder in the city in over a year and they believe it was an isolated incident. The investigation is still ongoing.
