Women accused of taking items from homicide victim's home hours after her death
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Two women were arrested after they allegedly took items from the home of a homicide victim who died earlier that same day, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Logan Burke, 23, was charged with one count of burglary.
Erica Weaver, 46, was charged with one county of burglary.
On December 19, officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to an alarm going off at a residence in the 1100 block of Oak Park Court.
The occupant of the residence had died in a shooting earlier that day.
Police later determined the back door of the residence had been opened and items were taken from inside.
As part of the investigation, officers spoke with Logan Burke, who said she was aware of the shooting and went with the victim’s mother to the South Bend Police Department earlier that morning.
After leaving the police department, Burke said she, Erica Weaver, and others went to the victim’s residence on Oak Park Court and took a number of items Burke said the victim wanted her to have, reports said.
The individuals kicked open the back door of the victim’s home to get inside, reports said.
Officers determined Burke was not next of kin to the victim and didn’t have permission from immediate family to be inside the residence.
Officers also spoke with Weaver, who said she was a mother figure to the victim.
Weaver said that on the morning of December 19, she went to the victim’s home with Burke and got items from the home, reports said.
Officers determined Weaver was not next of kin to the victim and didn’t have permission from immediate family to be in the residence.
Burke is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on a $250 cash bond.
Weaver was released on her own recognizance on Tuesday.
Both women are due in court on August 10.
