NOW: Walk-in Moderna vaccine clinic happening today at the Concord Event Center in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Health Department will be hosting a walk-in Moderna vaccine clinic today from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Concord Event Center in Elkhart.

Right now, the amount of fully vaccinated people in Indiana sits at around 1 million and 840 thousand people.

But, certain communities are seeing lower vaccination rates due to vaccine hesitancy.

The Elkhart County Health Department is now working more than ever to get minority groups informed and remove barriers that are causing a low rate of vaccinations in some communities.

According to the CDC, the demographics with the highest number of deaths are communities who have not yet been vaccinated.

And, in Indiana the groups seeing the lowest turnout at clinics are Black and Hispanic communities.

The CDC reports that about 86% of vaccinations in Indiana are among white residents, 9.4% are Black, and just 6.2% are Hispanic / Latino.

Some reasons many Hispanics are hesitant include language barriers, lack of information, internet access and access to a translator.

The low rate of vaccinations is now causing a surge of cases in communities of color and clinics in Indiana are working to change that by providing Spanish information online, creating Spanish flyers and providing translators at vaccination sites.

They are hoping to target Hispanic communities and will have Spanish translators available at the event.

Second doses will be administered on June 4th all you need to bring is some form of I.D.
