Victim of hit-and-run accident left unable to walk for months, suspect still out at large

NOW: Victim of hit-and-run accident left unable to walk for months, suspect still out at large

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Alyson Phillips is left with a pile of medical bills and won't be able to walk for months, due to a hit-and-run accident on Oct. 11.

He was walking to Martin's on Ironwood and crossing the street on River Avenue when he was hit by a pickup truck. Before he knew it, he was on the ground and bystanders rushed over to help. The driver fled the scene.

"I didn't expect to encounter that sort of recklessness on a Sunday afternoon," Phillips says.

"Maybe it's something I keep my head on a swivel if a Notre Dame game was just letting out, or it was New Years Eve."

But Phillips didn't expect to be transported to the hospital on a calm Sunday afternoon.

He says his left leg is shattered and suffered two fractures each on his tibia and fibula, along with a fracture on his foot.

Phillips says it will be at least two months until he can walk again.

A police report was filed with Mishawaka Police Department, and they confirm there is an open investigation. The suspect is still out at large.

But Phillips doesn't hold resentment for the suspect; he just wants the person to come forward.

"Life is better if you fess up to your mistakes. I would just ask that they come forward. I don't have a vindictive bone in my body, not even the ones that are broken."
